Healthy weight loss food at Taco Bell and McDonalds? Is this a noble move to be applauded, is it a big corporate money grab, or is it a double edged sword?

Seeing an opportunity, the local store owner pitched Subway corporate with an idea. Before long, Jared was the company spokesperson in their nationwide advertising campaigns which became known as The Subway Diet.

Can you Run Away From Fat?

Every day I go to the gym I see dozens of people running on treadmills. Some of them are running from the moment I arrive until the time I leave. I always wonder if these people are running because they really like running, or if they are running in hopes of burning off body fat.

My guess is most of them are interested in fat loss, and only a small portion of them are actually doing it simply because they like running. Unfortunately for these people running is not a very effective way of burning fat. Let me explain.

3 Keys to Losing Fat and Maintaining Muscle at The Same Time

There are three main keys to losing fat and gaining muscle. If you’re missing any of these you will most likely fail in your attempts to build a lean muscular body. So what are they?

1) Eat Less Calories than you burn off

2) Resistance Training

3) Eating enough protein to maintain muscle mass

That’s as short and sweet as I can put it.

Obsessive Compulsive Eating

Obsessive Compulsive Eating

The current diet dogma is totally confusing. Contradictory headlines come out on a daily basis, you’ve heard them all; “carbs are good, carbs are bad”, “eat low fat, eat healthy fats”, “count your calories, don’t count calories”, “high protein, 40/30/30”. It’s no wonder nobody has a clue what to eat anymore. This is all contributing to our national Obsessive Compulsive Eating (OCE) habits. Eating good food, looking good and losing weight is not that difficult if you know what to believe and what to ignore, this however is easier said than done. Here is my top 10 list of diet misconceptions that can be sabotaging your diet and stopping your weight loss dead in its tracks. Avoid these mistakes and get back on track to enjoying your food, losing weight, and looking great.

Pros and cons of the Atkins diet

atkins_dietThe Atkins diet is one of the most popular low carbohydrate diets on the market today. Its popularity has sparked dozens of look-a-like diets who center on the same principles of high-protein, low-carbohydrate eating. There are a lot of fish in the sea when it comes to choosing a low-carbohydrate plan.

Studies have shown that low-carbohydrate eating has many benefits. There have been scientific results that low-carbohydrate diets like Atkins do create significant weight loss without having to restrict calories. People who use the Atkins diet have also reported this. There are studies that show that low-carb eating improves triclycerides, reduces blood glucose for diabetics and pre-diabetics and increases good cholesterol (HDL). Low-carbohydrate dieting has been scientifically proven to improve insulin sensitivity, decrease blood pressure and lower blood insulin levels. When compared with low-fat diets, low-carb dieters lose less muscle mass.

Although not scientifically proven, there are many common benefits reported by Atkins dieters and other low-carb dieters. These include an increase in energy, a reduced craving for sweets, better concentration, improved mood and an lessening of depression type symptoms.

Atkins and Ketosis

The basic principle of the Atkins diet is that a state of ketosis will help you burn your fat stores as energy. Many people, even those who are on low carbohydrate diets, don’t quite understand ketosis and why it works.

Most diets are calorie-reduction diets. They help you lose weight, but some of the weight is from fat and some of it is from lean muscle tissue. While you may look smaller on the scale, your metabolism is actually slowing down. The more muscle you lose the slower your metabolism will be. This makes losing weight more difficult and gaining weight back even simpler.

The Atkins diet, on the other hand, is carbohydrate restrictive. It creates a state of ketosis in your body that burns only fat, and not muscle. The primary source of your energy for your body will be fat in the form of ketones. Your liver will convert fat into ketones and it cannot be converted back. It will be excreted naturally.
